Habits of a Highly Effective Blogger
DC-based corporate blog consultant Debbie Weil (BlogWrite for CEO’s) interviewed Steve Rubel, PR blogger par excellance, about his blogging habits.
Part 1 & Part 2
Here’s his systematic approach:
He blogs 3 – 4 hours a day with the following posting schedule:
- He starts at 4:30 or 5 AM every morning to reach his European audience
- Tries to find some time in the middle of the day
- An hour or two in the evening
What he posts:
- Mostly short posts, annotations on items he comes across
- Once-a-day linkblog, automatically updated from del.icio.us
- Occassional opinion pieces
What does he blog?
- “I look for something that ideally no one else has yet that’s news or a great idea.”
- Sounds like his blog started with a conscious topical focus and has become more diffuse:
“I wanted to do something different. I saw a niche that wasn’t being filled – the intersection of blogging, PR and RSS.” Now he also covers “tech, search and whatever is next… like podcasting, of course.”
Sources
- “News first, followed by del.icio.us and blog searches.”
How does he measure his readership? - Feedburner to track his rss subscribers (currently ~3,500)
- Blogpatrol, Statcounter and Sitemeter for site stats
Why does he blog?
- To share
- To connect
- To build business
Advice?
- He quotes Halley Suitt in saying “blog early, blog often, bake fresh bread (e.g. something you can’t get anywhere else) and write op-eds.”
- Update: Steve recognizes that Debbie got the scoop
